Getting reacquainted with my OM10s

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted! I’m still familiarising myself with my Macbook, I’ve upgraded my blog from dasBlog to BlogEngine.NET (thanks to handy tips from Kivanc Ozuolmez) and I’ve been working like an absolute fury on my day job. Fortunately, I’ve managed to wangle things such that I am now only working 4 days as it looks like the Analysis & Reporting Services solution I have been building for a client for the last few months is now up and running. As I haven’t been shooting much lately, and I’ve still got a stack load of out of date E6 in my fridge, I figured I’d spend some time getting re-acquainted with my OM10s.

An Olympus OM10 is the first camera I can remember having as a kid that I was seriously interested in using, though I was given a Pentax much earlier (I was too young!). My original OM10 had long since disappeared, but I’d managed to source a couple on eBay (for peanuts), one with a manual shutter speed control, and one without. I’ve also managed to get my hands an another couple of lenses, though my favourite is still the 50mm F1.4 Zeiss, which is tack sharp and seriously fast.

I’ve been using my Lomo to shoot quite a lot of street stuff lately, but unfortunately the results have been far from satisfactory. The problem with the LCA Kompakt is that although you have some control over aperture and focus, unless you carry a light meter around, it’s nigh on impossible to determine what your shutter speeds going to be. And you have no control over it at all. So I figured I’d slap some Fujichrome Sensia 400 that I’ve had sat in my fridge for a while into one of my OM10s and go shoot. I managed to get about 2 dozen rolls of the slide film from PFD in Manchester for a £1 a roll a while back, so its now about 2 years out of date (the longer the better eh icon wink Getting reacquainted with my OM10s ) . Jessops will cross-process it, providing I don’t submit more than a couple of rolls a week as apparently it dilutes the chemicals in the machine.

Anyway, these images are the result of a trip into Manchester on a relatively sunny day on the first day of the Manchester International Festival. All in all, I’m quite pleased with the results, though I must make an effort to try and get closer to my subjects. I find the OM10 much more suited to street photography, as its far less obtrusive than using a D300 or other DSLR.
